Mold can be caused by:

Roof leaks:
An easy way to spot a roof leak is visible damage to the ceiling below the attic.  As soon as a spot is visible you should call for a free inspection.

Foundation leaks:
The pressure in the soil around your foundation can lead to cracks in poured concrete walls and mortar joints.  This happens when the soil becomes over saturated causing swelling and forcing the structure inward.

Trapped moisture:
Mold needs five basic ingredients to grow: Organic food source, Moisture, Proper temperature (68F-86F), stagnant air (only in early stages) and Time.

Improper dry out after water damage:
If another company took charge of drying first and failed to remove all the moisture inside the dwelling causing what is known as secondary damage this is damage that occurred to materials that weren’t originally affected by the loss but due to prolonged moisture exposure other materials become affected. They may have had the best of intentions, but misguided repairs can lead to more costly fixes down the road.

Poor waterproofing:
This could be from a DIY project that failed or from a company that cut corners.  Never use paint to simply cover over areas that should be waterproofed.  Cheap paint is cheap paint and can lead to expensive repairs in the future.  Over waterproofing a house can also lead to moisture buildup.  Houses need to breathe just like humans.

Poor drainage:
Proper drainage is just as important, keeping downspouts and gutters free of clutter can go a long way to preventing drainage problems.  Exterior surfaces need to be able to shed rainwater.

Condensation in your attic or crawlspace:
Water caused from condensation can build up over time. If you see any signs of mold growth in your home or business call for a mold inspection immediately.  Let the experts at Empire Roofing and Restoration make your home or commercial structure as good as new!
